In-Bumper Rear Foglights

The normal dangling rear foglight that gets put onto surfs always get ripped off if you do any sort of off-roading (also I think they look pretty crap too). One solution is to mount one or two foglights into the rear bumper which is exactly what I did.

I had trouble finding suitable flush-fit foglights, I could not find any in Halfords or places like that and the ones on ebay were about £25 each which I thought was too much. I finally managed to find a couple of import companies that sell them for around £15 each: Protech and Import Solutions.

Tools/Equipment Used

  • Angle grinder with suitable metal-cutting disc.
  • Saftey goggles/gloves.
  • File
  • Cross-head screwdriver.
  • Wire, connectors, wire cutters/strippers, crimping tool.
  • Drill
  • Primer/Underseal (recommended)

Firstly I made a template out of cardboard to check the exact size hole required to fit the foglights. Then I used this template to mark out where to cut on the bumper.

If you look behind the bumper you can see where the brackets are and where you can and can't mount the foglights.

Then I used the angle-grinder with cutting disc to cut the hole and the file to smooth out the edges and corners.

Once I was sure the foglight frame would fit I used some primer to attempt to "seal" the cut edges which should at least help against rust.

Then I wired up the foglights to the existing wire from the old dangling foglight and attached the frame to the foglight (these ones came with self-tapping screws to do this).

Then I put the complete unit into the hole and drilled the two holes for the screws that hold it into the bumper. I had to use alternative self-tapping screws here becuase the ones that come with the foglights are meant for plastic bumpers so I could not use them to tap into the metal.
